Training and coaching, for it to bring out the best in you, needs to be both individualized and scientific. Whether you just want to start running, join your first Triathlon, or are already preparing for a marathon or Ironman, the keys to success still remain the same. These are important things to consider when choosing a coach and signing up for a training plan. Individualized training means creating a program that suits you. Yes, there are lots of plans out there that can help you prepare for an event but without knowing whether these fit you as an individual, you might be wasting your time or even wasting your potential. What is individualized or personalized coaching?

For a program to be personalized, we need to take a complete picture of the situation. This means taking a few important things into consideration that can help us come up with a properly designed plan of attack. My purpose as a coach, is to help you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

We need to take a look at the following:

  1. What are your goals? Even if you’re a just newbie or a veteran, everything starts with goal- setting. By understanding where the target is and making sure it is S.M.A.R.T – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound we have a better grasp of the situation.
  2. What are your abilities? This points your current fitness level and this is where performance tests like lactate and vo2max/metabolic testing can help. Understanding these factors, helps me, as a coach, prioritize workouts and identify weaknesses. In doing so, each session can be more efficient and effective. Even without such tests, understanding what you’re capable of is integral to any training plan.
  3. What’s your schedule like? A program, no matter how well-thought of, is useless if the athlete cannot execute it. Aside from knowing what’s accessible in terms of equipment and venue, time-availability is another thing to consider. I always tell my athletes that time is the only commodity you can neither replace nor multiply. Each one of us, no matter where we stand in life, has the same 24 hours in a day and the same 7 days in a week. What we make of the time available to us spells the difference.

Being scientific is another ingredient in having a successful training plan. Training that is backed up by science, evidence, and data has been proven to play a huge role in improving one’s performance. We need to understand why things happen so we know what to do. My job is to give you sound advice and instruct you properly and without the help of science, it’s rather impossible to do this. Ultimately, my goal as a coach is to not only give instruction but also share knowledge and information. I want you, as an athlete, to be well-equipped and knowledgeable such that each training session can be performed better.

Cardio and fitness in general are not limited to multisport and running events or races such as triathlons, duathlons, marathons, Ironmans, and the like. Other sports, such as basketball, football, obstacle course racing, and even Crossfit greatly benefit from having a dedicated cardio (e.g. endurance, speed, etc.) specific training program. My job as a coach is to help you understand where you are in terms of fitness so we can tackle your limiters and bring out the very best in you. Whether you’re in the Phlippines or not, we can help!
